A compiled list of FAQ’s that is long overdue! Let’s get into it
Q: Favorite shops for home decor and furniture
Article, West Elm, CB2, Serena and Lily, Eclectic Goods, are my top favorites for furniture and some decor. Decor is hard for me.. it really depends on the season or currently collection but homegoods, target, cb2, for simple basic decor items. As a designer I find shopping for decor hit or miss. I may just be launching a lil somethin’ later this year ;)
Q: Cost effective tips on renovating a Kitchen
-Updating your cabinet faces instead of the boxes (unless you’re redoing configuration).
-Paint and modern hardware!! That is a game changer for sure!
-Only change the things that you REALLY hate - like if your countertops aren’t your first choice- that’s ok! If you love everything else surrounding, it will make a huge difference
-Be realistic about your budget
Q: Your style is so cohesive - How do you master that?
I definitely know what I like, and I don’t try and make something work if it’s not my vibe. I like light, bright, effortless spaces with a subtle touch of natural earthy-ness. It wasn’t until I started designing professionally to find my “look”. The more you practice and play with styling and designing, the better you become at it! I can’t wait to see how my “look” evolves in the years to come!
Q: Recommendations on switching careers to interior design - is school necessary?
I touched on this and shared my story in this blog post. I have always thought school is pointless unless you know what you’re aiming for. Make sure you can afford the school, and that if you take out loans, your profession will profit you enough money to repay. My formal education stopped after high school, so I really wanted to further my knowledge and learn the basics of Interior Design. However I do NOT think it’s mandatory at all! So many people don’t have a degree.
Q: Bedding ideas - Not sure how to mix and match prints / texture
I personally like to keep it as neutral as I can and have throw pillows or blankets have the texture or colors! For sheets and bedding I like mixing whites, ivory, cream, grey. Then for a little color + texture just buy what speaks to you! You can always switch it up too.
Q: How to make “old man” furniture look good in bedroom
AH! You can’t?!
Q: Tips on buying furniture online
Read reviews!!! Always. Double check your measurements, and take the stock photo and c/p it onto a work doc or keynote of the other items in that room like your rug, chairs, etc. If you like the mood board, you should be set to buy.
Also, make sure the return policy works for you.
Q: Favorite interior accounts to follow
Obviously the big ones like Amber Interiors or Studio McGee but honestly I don’t follow a ton of interior design accounts because I don’t need to get swept up in what others are doing, or compare myself to others who have been doing this for 20+ years.
Q: Where do you get inspo
Pinterest for sure! Follow me to get a dose of what’s inspiring to me lately.
Q: Stance on family photos on display. Good bad or ugly?
Absolutely allowed, however pick one place to have them (hallway or bedroom) and keep it to a minimum.
Q: How do I know when enough is enough decoration wise
Less is best, always. Keep it minimal and tasteful and stick to items you’re obsessed with and love looking at!
