8 Ways to Add Character to a Cookie Cutter Home

If you’re dwelling in a newer home, you’re probably in some kind of neighborhood development where everything looks fresh and cheery, with wide streets and sweet neighborhood parks. The one downfall? Your home might be lacking originality, and looks a little too similar to your neighbors. Here are 8 ways to add character to your cookie cutter home.

paint, duh!

If you live in a “cookie cutter” home, it probably has one paint color throughout the whole house, including ceilings. Pick a bright white and paint your ceilings, hallways and trim to create an open and airy flow. Then the fun part- decide if you want a dark and moody bedroom, contrasting kitchen cabinets, or a fun pop of color! Paint is the most affordable way to change the whole look of your space. Not into the bold colors? stick to white + a warm grey for a soft and modern look.

For some curb appeal, paint your front door!

wallpaper

oh, wallpaper. my love. Wallpaper is more expensive than paint, that is for sure. HOWEVER wallpaper creates such a unique statement, and there are options for everyone! If your not into classic floral wallpaper, there are modern geometric patters, and ever super minimal patterns as well. Where do you start? pinterest to get an idea of what style you like, and then contact my favorite local shop (online too!) Manolo Walls.

light fixtures

Friends don’t let friends have basic light fixtures! Boob lights, stock glass fixtures, whatever you call them- they do not belong in your house! I’m not saying you need an extravagant fixture in every room, simple classic fixtures will do the trick!

hardware

switching hardware is also such a game changer! It’s one of those things you don’t know how bad it is until it’s gone.. You can pick something super modern, or a little more eclectic depending on the look you’re wanting to achieve.

baseboards / molding / paneling

adding a bit of character to the “bones” of your home will make for some unique differences from the rest of your block, as well as adding more visual interest. Replace your baseboards with something a little more modern, or replace with something a little more classic and charming. Crown molding around doors, windows, or the ceiling adds a lot of detail and intention. There are tons of options for wall paneling, not just shiplap!

Tile

Update a kitchen backsplash, fireplace, or a shower - wherever you have stock tile - find something you love and switch it up!

window treatments

If you just have blinds on your windows, install a curtain rod and some clean white curtains! Some say curtains are the eyebrows of the room!

Ah!

I couldn’t help but add this in!! Look into HOW to hang your curtains before hand so you don’t make this mistake!

sink faucets / shower faucets

Choose some unique + modern faucets to replace cheap silver ones! Making your bathroom feel luxurious is the BEST way to spend your money, promise.

happy updating!
