I’ll be honest - I’ve always had an eye for interior design, overall theme of a room, and picking out just the right items. Displaying those items? Yeah, it didn’t come so naturally. I was absolutely horrible at styling shelves. It wasn’t until I styled my shelves about 23 different times I got the hang of it.
It takes practice!
Basic Guidelines:
You need a LOT of items
Books (bonus points if they’re pretty or cohesive colors)
Plants - real or faux.. I’m all for faux, as it will be completely abandoned and never get watered.
Trinkets - We all have em! Candles, dishes, trays, rocks, matches, coasters, picture frames, figurines, fresh flowers, vases, the cup you made in ceramics 8 years ago, literally ANYTHING. If you don’t like the look of it- paint it.
Pick an overall theme for your shelf. This doesn’t always have to mean “boho” or “ minimal” it can simply mean your favorite things. Take a good look at your inventory and take notes of colors, heights of objects, and what looks good together!
THE STACK
Stack 2-4 books on each other, pick a hand full of colors and focus those on that section. If your going for super bright and colorful - throw this rule out the window.
On top of the stack, pick 3 different items of different heights. A simple go to is a plant, a candle, and a decor figure!
Re arrange and switch it up until you feel you’re getting the hang of it!
A few personal tips-
Load. That. Baby. Up. the chunkier the stack, the bigger the statement.
Mix bold statement pieces with lighter and more transitional pieces.
